Français — Imparfait: formation and uses
The imparfait is a past tense for description, ongoing situations, and habits. It is formed from the nous form of the present tense: take parler → nous parlons, drop -ons, and add the endings, e.g. je parlais, nous parlions.
How it works
Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons to get the stem, and add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. The stem is identical for every verb, so finir → nous finissons gives je finissais, and prendre → nous prenons gives je prenais.
Examples
| Person | Ending | parler (to speak) |
|---|---|---|
| je | -ais | je parlais |
| tu | -ais | tu parlais |
| il / elle | -ait | il parlait |
| nous | -ions | nous parlions |
| vous | -iez | vous parliez |
| ils / elles | -aient | ils parlaient |
| être (nous sommes → stem ét-) | — | j'étais, nous étions |
Good to know
One verb breaks the nous-form rule: être. Its present nous sommes gives no usable stem, so the imparfait uses the special stem ét-: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient. Note also that -ger and -cer verbs keep their spelling change before -ais/-ait/-aient: nous mangions but je mangeais, il commençait.
