Español — Irregular affirmative imperative

Eight tú commands are irregular. Learn these affirmative forms, and build the vosotros and usted(es) forms predictably.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The affirmative tú imperative is irregular for eight verbs: di (decir), haz (hacer), ve (ir), pon (poner), sal (salir), sé (ser), ten (tener), ven (venir). The vosotros form is always regular — replace the final -r of the infinitive with -d: hablad, comed, venid. The usted and ustedes forms come straight from the present subjunctive: ponga, pongan.

Good to know

⚠ Note

These short forms exist only in the affirmative. In the negative, every person uses the subjunctive: no digas, no hagas, no pongas. Note too that ve is the command for both ir and ver, so context tells them apart.
