Español — Imperative with pronouns

In the affirmative imperative, object and reflexive pronouns attach to the end of the verb (dímelo, siéntate); in the negative they go before it (no me lo digas).

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Affirmative: the pronoun is enclitic — glued to the verb (siéntate, dímelo, levántese). Adding a syllable usually forces a written accent to keep the original stress: dime → dímelo. Negative: the pronoun is proclitic and separate (no te sientes, no me lo digas).

2

Examples

Affirmative (enclitic) vs. negative (proclitic)
Affirmative Negative
dímelo no me lo digas
siéntate no te sientes
levántese no se levante
dáselo no se lo des
escríbeme no me escribas
hágalo no lo haga

Good to know

⚠ Note

With the nosotros and vosotros reflexive forms a consonant drops: sentémonos loses the -s of sentemos (not «sentémosnos»), and sentaos loses the -d of sentad (not «sentados»). Note also idos as the irregular vosotros form of irse.
