Italiano — The imperfetto

The imperfetto is a past tense for describing, for ongoing or habitual actions, and for setting the background of a story.

Add -avo, -evo, -ivo to the stem for the three conjugations: parlare → parlavo, leggere → leggevo, dormire → dormivo. A few common verbs are irregular: essere → ero, avere → avevo, fare → facevo, dire → dicevo, bere → bevevo. It expresses ongoing states, habits and background: Da bambino giocavo sempre in giardino.

⚠ Note

Use the imperfetto for ongoing or background actions, not for completed ones. Compare: Mentre leggevo, ha suonato il telefono — the interrupted action (leggevo) takes the imperfetto, while the single completed event (ha suonato) takes the passato prossimo.
