Español — Indirect questions

An embedded question is a question tucked inside another sentence: No sé dónde está. The interrogative word keeps its written accent, and, unlike English, the verb-subject order of the direct question is kept.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Introduce the embedded question with a verb of knowing or asking plus the interrogative word: no sé si viene, dime qué quieres, pregunta cuándo llega. Yes/no questions use si (¿Viene? → No sé si viene). Unlike English, the verb-subject inversion is normally kept: No sé dónde vive Ana; the only change from the direct ¿Dónde vive Ana? is that no question marks are used.

2

Examples

Direct question vs. embedded question
Direct question Embedded question
¿Viene mañana? No sé si viene mañana.
¿Qué quieres? Dime qué quieres.
¿Dónde está la llave? No recuerdo dónde está la llave.
¿Cuándo llega el tren? Pregunta cuándo llega el tren.
¿Cómo se escribe? No sé cómo se escribe.
¿Quién ha llamado? Dime quién ha llamado.
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

Don't confuse si 'if/whether' (no accent) with sí 'yes' (with accent): No sé si viene vs. Dice que sí. Also keep the accent on the interrogative word even inside the sentence — No sé que quiere (relative 'that') means something different from No sé qué quiere ('what he wants'). The whole indirect question takes no question marks: No sé dónde está, not ¿No sé dónde está?
