Deutsch — irgend- compounds
The prefix irgend- turns question words into indefinites meaning 'some… or other': irgendwer, irgendwas, irgendwo, irgendwann, irgendwie, irgendwohin, irgendein.
How it works
Prefix irgend- to a w-word to leave the reference open: Hat irgendwer angerufen? ('Did anyone call?'), Er ist irgendwo im Haus ('He is somewhere in the house'). Before a noun, use the declined irgendein: Nimm irgendein Buch ('Take some book or other'). irgendwer/irgendwas have the fuller variants irgendjemand and irgendetwas.
Examples
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| irgendwer | someone / anyone | Hat irgendwer angerufen? |
| irgendwas | something / anything | Sag irgendwas! |
| irgendwo | somewhere | Er ist irgendwo im Haus. |
| irgendwann | sometime | Wir treffen uns irgendwann. |
| irgendwie | somehow | Das klappt schon irgendwie. |
| irgendwohin | to somewhere | Fahren wir irgendwohin! |
| irgendein | some (…or other) + noun | Nimm irgendein Buch. |
Good to know
Do not use irgend- in a negation. The negatives are separate words: niemand (no one), nichts (nothing), nirgends/nirgendwo (nowhere), nie (never). Say Ich sehe niemanden, not *Ich sehe nicht irgendwen. Also note irgendein has no plural — use irgendwelche instead: irgendwelche Fragen? ('any questions?').
