Deutsch — je…desto/umso
Proportional clauses link two things that rise or fall together: Je mehr…, desto besser ("the more…, the better"). The je-part is a subordinate clause with the verb at the end; the desto/umso-part is a main clause with the verb in second position.
How it works
Both parts use a comparative adjective/adverb. In the je-clause the verb goes to the end (Je mehr ich lerne); in the desto- or umso-clause the comparative comes first, then the verb: Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser verstehe ich. desto and umso are interchangeable.
Examples
| je-clause | desto/umso-clause |
|---|---|
| Je mehr ich lerne, | desto besser verstehe ich. |
| Je länger wir warten, | desto teurer wird es. |
| Je schneller du sprichst, | umso weniger verstehe ich. |
| Je öfter man übt, | desto leichter fällt es. |
| Je kälter es wird, | umso wärmer ziehe ich mich an. |
| Je mehr, | desto besser. |
Good to know
Common mistake: forgetting the word order. The je-part is subordinate, so its verb must sit at the end — say Je mehr ich lerne, not Je mehr lerne ich. The desto/umso-part is a main clause with inversion: the verb comes right after the comparative, so desto besser verstehe ich, not desto ich verstehe besser. In short fixed pairs the verb can be dropped: Je mehr, desto besser.
