Deutsch — kein vs. nicht
German has two words for negation. Use kein to negate a noun that has ein or no article (kein Auto), and nicht for everything else — verbs, adjectives and nouns with a definite article (Er kommt nicht).
1
How it works
✓ Rule
kein replaces the indefinite article ein or a missing article and is declined exactly like ein: kein Auto, keine Milch, keine Bücher. nicht negates a verb (Er kommt nicht), an adjective (nicht schön) or a noun that already has a definite article (das Auto nicht).
2
Examples
| Example | What is negated |
|---|---|
| Ich habe kein Auto. | Noun with the indefinite article (ein → kein) |
| Ich habe keine Zeit. | Feminine noun with no article |
| Ich lese keine Bücher. | Plural noun with zero article |
| Ich mag das Auto nicht. | Noun that already has a definite article |
| Er kommt nicht. | The verb |
| Das ist nicht schön. | An adjective |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Never combine nicht with ein. Say Ich habe kein Auto, not Ich habe nicht ein Auto. The moment a noun would take ein or no article, the negation must be kein.
