Polski — Conjugation group I (-ę, -esz)
In the present tense, group I verbs take the endings -ę, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, -ą. Verbs like pisać (piszę) and iść (idę) belong here; the stem often changes before these endings.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Add the personal endings -ę, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, -ą to the present stem: pisać → piszę, piszesz, pisze, piszemy, piszecie, piszą. The stem may soften or alternate, as in iść → idę, idziesz, idzie.
2
Full paradigm
| Person | pisać (to write) | iść (to go) |
|---|---|---|
| ja | piszę | idę |
| ty | piszesz | idziesz |
| on / ona / ono | pisze | idzie |
| my | piszemy | idziemy |
| wy | piszecie | idziecie |
| oni / one | piszą | idą |

Good to know
⚠ Note
The stem change is not optional: it is piszę, not "pisę", and idę with the nasal ending in the 1st person singular (-ę: piszę, idę) and 3rd person plural (-ą: piszą, idą), but -e- everywhere else. Don't confuse this group with group II (-ę, -isz/-ysz), where the second-person ending is -isz, e.g. mówić → mówię, mówisz.
