A small but frequent group of verbs takes the endings -em, -esz in the present tense. The core members are jeść (to eat), wiedzieć (to know) and rozumieć (to understand).

Group IV verbs take the endings -em, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, e.g. jem, jesz, je, jemy, jecie (jeść); the same pattern gives wiem, wiesz, wie (wiedzieć) and rozumiem, rozumiesz, rozumie (rozumieć).

⚠ Note

The 3rd person plural splits the group: jeść and wiedzieć end in -dzą (jedzą, wiedzą), but rozumieć and umieć end in -ją (rozumieją, umieją) — never *rozumiedzą.
