Polski — Indefinite numerals
Words like kilka, kilkanaście and parę name an approximate quantity instead of an exact number. They govern the genitive plural (kilka książek) and take a special masculine-personal form (kilku, paru).
How it works
The counted noun goes into the genitive plural: kilka dni ('a few days'), kilkanaście osób ('a dozen or so people'), parę złotych ('a couple of zlotys'). In the nominative/accusative the numeral typically ends in -a or -ę and the verb (past tense) is neuter singular: przyszło kilka osób ('a few people came').
The forms
| Form (masc.-pers.) | Approximate quantity | Example |
|---|---|---|
| parę / paru | a couple (2–4) | parę dni / paru chłopców |
| kilka / kilku | a few (3–9) | kilka książek / kilku uczniów |
| kilkanaście / kilkunastu | a dozen or so (11–19) | kilkanaście osób / kilkunastu żołnierzy |
| kilkadziesiąt / kilkudziesięciu | several dozen (20–90) | kilkadziesiąt lat / kilkudziesięciu gości |
| kilkaset / kilkuset | a few hundred (200–900) | kilkaset złotych / kilkuset ludzi |
Good to know
For groups that include a man, use the masculine-personal form and put the noun in the genitive plural: kilku studentów, paru kolegów, kilkunastu mężczyzn — not *kilka studentów. The genitive stays even in oblique cases: z kilkoma osobami, o kilkunastu latach.
