Polski — instrumental & locative case use
Two Polish cases with clear jobs: the instrumental (narzędnik) marks the tool, the company "with", and the predicate noun after być, while the locative (miejscownik) always follows a preposition to show place or topic.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
The narzędnik (instrumental) names the tool or means (piszę długopisem), "with" someone or something (idę z kolegą, kawa z mlekiem), and the predicate noun after być (Jestem nauczycielem, Ona jest lekarką). The miejscownik (locative) ALWAYS follows a preposition and marks location or topic (w Polsce, na stole, o książce, przy oknie, po pracy).

Examples
| Case | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| narzędnik | tool / with whom | piszę długopisem |
| narzędnik | predicate after być | Jestem studentem. |
| miejscownik | place (after a preposition) | mieszkam w Polsce |

Good to know
⚠ Note
The locative never appears without a preposition (w, na, o, przy, po). The instrumental after być names a profession or identity: Adam jest inżynierem.
