Français — Expletive 'ne'
In refined French, a 'ne' with no negative meaning appears after certain conjunctions and comparatives: Sortons avant qu'il ne pleuve. It does not make the clause negative — there is no pas, and the sentence stays affirmative.
How it works
After avant que, à moins que, de peur que / de crainte que, and after verbs of fearing like craindre que, a bare 'ne' (no pas) precedes the subjunctive: Je crains qu'il ne soit trop tard. It also follows an inequality comparative: Il est plus grand que je ne le pensais. The 'ne' is optional and belongs to careful register.
Examples
| Trigger | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Let's leave before it gets dark. |
| I'll come, unless it rains. |
| He whispers for fear of being heard. |
| I fear she has already left. |
| I'll prevent him from starting again. |
| He is richer than people think. |
| It's cheaper than I thought. |
Good to know
Do not confuse expletive 'ne' with real negation: with pas the meaning flips. Il est plus grand que je ne le pensais = taller than I thought, but à moins que tu ne viennes pas = unless you don't come. Expletive 'ne' also stays out after avant que in the affirmative when the register is neutral, and it is dropped after equality comparatives (aussi… que) and after autre / autrement que only optionally. It never appears with an indicative main-clause negation already present.
