Español — Time clauses (indicative)
Spanish links two events in time with connectors like antes de, después de, al, mientras, cuando and hasta que. Some take an infinitive when both actions share the same subject; others take a conjugated verb. In this card the conjugated verb is in the indicative, used for habitual or past facts, as in Cuando llego a casa, ceno.
How it works
With one shared subject, antes de, después de, al and nada más take the infinitive: antes de salir, después de comer, al llegar, nada más entrar. When the subject changes, or with mientras, cuando and hasta que describing habits or past events, use a conjugated verb in the indicative: antes de que salgas, mientras estudio, cuando era niño, hasta que llegó el tren.
Examples
| Structure | Example (verbatim) | Meaning / use |
|---|---|---|
| antes de + inf. | Me lavo los dientes antes de acostarme. | Same subject; earlier action. |
| antes de que + subj. | Sal antes de que empiece a llover. | Different subject (this one takes subjunctive). |
| después de + inf. | Después de cenar, salimos a pasear. | Same subject; later action. |
| al + inf. | Al entrar, encendí la luz. | "On/upon doing"; simultaneous or immediate. |
| mientras + indic. | Mientras cocino, escucho música. | Two actions at once. |
| cuando + indic. | Cuando llego a casa, ceno. | Habitual or past fact (indicative). |
| hasta que + indic. | Esperé hasta que llegó el autobús. | Up to a past point (indicative). |
| nada más + inf. | Nada más llegar, me llamó. | "As soon as"; immediately after. |
Good to know
Watch the future: cuando and hasta que switch to the subjunctive for events not yet realized. Compare Cuando llego, ceno (habit, indicative) with Cuando llegue, cenaré (future, subjunctive). Only the habitual and past uses take the indicative shown here.
