Français — Relative 'où' (place/time)
The relative pronoun où replaces a noun of place or time, as in la ville où j'habite and le jour où il est parti.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
où refers to a place — la maison où je suis né — or to a moment — l'année où nous sommes arrivés. With a preposition of origin it becomes d'où: le pays d'où je viens ('the country I come from').

Examples
| Example | Use / meaning |
|---|---|
| la ville où j'habite | place: 'the city where I live' |
| le jour où il est parti | time: 'the day (when) he left' |
| le moment où tout a changé | time: 'the moment (when) everything changed' |
| le pays d'où je viens | origin: 'the country I come from' |
| l'endroit où nous nous sommes rencontrés | place: 'the spot where we met' |
| la table sur laquelle je travaille | with a preposition, use lequel — not où — for a thing you act on |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Don't confuse où (with accent, 'where') and ou (no accent, 'or'). For time, où — not quand — is the relative: say le jour où je t'ai vu, not le jour quand je t'ai vu.
