Deutsch — Forming Partizip II

The past participle (Partizip II) is needed for the perfect tense and the passive. Most verbs frame the stem with the prefix ge-, but the ending (-t or -en) and whether ge- appears at all depend on the verb type: machen → gemacht, sehen → gesehen, studieren → studiert.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Weak verbs take ge- + stem + -t (machen → gemacht), strong verbs take ge- + stem + -en, often with a vowel change (sehen → gesehen, sprechen → gesprochen). Verbs ending in -ieren and verbs with an inseparable prefix (be-, ver-, ent-, er-, ge-, zer-, emp-) take no ge-: studieren → studiert, besuchen → besucht. Separable verbs put ge- between the prefix and the stem: aufmachen → aufgemacht, einkaufen → eingekauft.

2

Patterns

Verb type → Partizip II
Type / pattern Infinitive → Partizip II Meaning
Weak: ge- + -t machen → gemacht to do, to make
Strong: ge- + -en (vowel change) sprechen → gesprochen to speak
-ieren: no ge-, ending -t studieren → studiert to study
Inseparable prefix: no ge- besuchen → besucht to visit
Separable: prefix + ge- + stem aufmachen → aufgemacht to open
Separable (weak stem) einkaufen → eingekauft to shop, to buy
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

The rules can combine: einkaufen is separable, so ge- goes inside → eingekauft, but the stem kaufen is weak, so the ending is -t, not -en. A frequent learner mistake is adding ge- to -ieren verbs (wrong gestudiert instead of studiert) or to inseparable verbs (wrong gebesucht instead of besucht). Whether ge- appears in a separable verb depends on the base verb: aufmachen → aufgemacht (base gemacht), but verkaufen → verkauft (inseparable base, no ge-).
