Deutsch — Passive alternatives

German often avoids the werden-passive by using other constructions. Sentences like Man löst das Problem, Das Problem lässt sich lösen, Das Problem ist zu lösen and Das Problem ist lösbar all express a passive idea without werden.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Instead of the werden-passive, German uses: the impersonal man (Man repariert das Auto), sich lassen for feasibility (Das lässt sich reparieren = it can be repaired), sein + zu + infinitive for necessity or possibility (Das ist zu reparieren), adjectives in -bar meaning "able to be …" (Das ist reparierbar), and reflexive verbs (Die Tür öffnet sich).

Examples

Passive alternatives and their passive equivalent
Construction Example Passive equivalent
man + Aktiv Man löst das Problem. Das Problem wird gelöst. (agent unnamed)
sich lassen Das Problem lässt sich lösen. Das Problem kann gelöst werden. (feasibility)
sein + zu + Infinitiv Das Problem ist zu lösen. Das Problem muss / kann gelöst werden. (necessity or possibility)
Adjektiv auf -bar Das Problem ist lösbar. Das Problem kann gelöst werden. (has the property)
Reflexivverb Die Tür öffnet sich. Die Tür wird geöffnet. (process, no agent)
sich lassen + Verneinung Das lässt sich nicht ändern. Das kann nicht geändert werden. (impossibility)

Good to know

⚠ Note

These forms are not fully interchangeable. sich lassen and -bar chiefly express possibility (Das lässt sich reparieren, reparierbar), while sein + zu + Infinitiv often carries obligation: Die Rechnung ist bis Freitag zu bezahlen means the bill must be paid, not merely can be. Also, sich lassen always needs a subject and reflexive sich (Das lässt sich machen), so never drop the sich.
