Français — peu / un peu / un peu de
A single word changes everything: peu means "little" with a negative slant (not enough), while un peu means "a little" with a positive one (a small but real amount). Compare Il mange peu (he barely eats) with Il mange un peu (he eats a bit).
How it works
Alone with a verb, peu is negative (Il travaille peu = he works little) and un peu is positive (Il travaille un peu = he works a bit). Before an uncountable noun, add de: un peu de = a small positive amount (un peu de sel), peu de = not much / few (peu de temps, peu de gens). Before an adjective, peu means "not very" (C'est peu utile) and un peu means "slightly" (un peu fatigué).

Good to know
un peu de goes only with uncountable nouns (un peu de lait, un peu d'eau). For countable nouns in the plural, use quelques, not "un peu de": say quelques amis, never un peu d'amis. To mean "few", peu de covers both (peu d'amis, peu de lait).
