Italiano — Adverb placement
In compound tenses, short adverbs like già, ancora, sempre, mai and più usually sit between the auxiliary and the past participle: ho già mangiato, non ho ancora finito.
How it works
With a compound tense (auxiliary avere/essere + past participle), place già, ancora, sempre, mai and più right after the auxiliary: sei sempre stato gentile, non ci sono mai andato, non abbiamo più visto quel film. Longer or modal adverbs of manner tend to follow the participle instead: ha risposto velocemente.
Examples
| Adverb | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| già | Ho già mangiato. | I have already eaten. |
| ancora | Non ho ancora finito. | I haven't finished yet. |
| sempre | Sei sempre stato gentile. | You have always been kind. |
| mai | Non ci sono mai andato. | I have never been there. |
| più | Non abbiamo più visto quel film. | We didn't see that film again. |
| già + essere | Sono già usciti. | They have already left. |
Good to know
In negative sentences non stays before the auxiliary and the adverb still comes after it: non ho mai visto, non sono ancora arrivati. Putting the adverb after the participle (ho mangiato già) is possible for emphasis but sounds marked; the neutral order is auxiliary + adverb + participle.
