The present perfect connects the past with the present moment: an action in unfinished time or one whose result matters now.

How it works

Form it with have/has + past participle to link the past to now — either an unfinished time span or a present result. Common signal words are just, already, yet, ever, never, since and for.

Good to know
⚠ Note
Use the present perfect for unspecified time; use the past simple with a finished time (yesterday, in 2010). Note the difference: been = went and came back; gone = went and is still away.
