The present perfect connects the past with the present moment: an action in unfinished time or one whose result matters now.

How it works

Form it with have/has + past participle to link the past to now — either an unfinished time span or a present result. Common signal words are just, already, yet, ever, never, since and for.

Good to know
⚠ Note
Use the present perfect for past events at an unspecified time when they are relevant to the present; use the past simple with a finished past time (yesterday, in 2010). In the expressions have been to and have gone to, been to describes a completed visit, while gone to normally means the person went there and has not yet returned.
