Español — Prepositional pronouns

After a preposition, Spanish uses tonic pronouns such as para mí, a ti and con él. Most look like the subject pronouns, but yo and tú become mí and ti, and con fuses into conmigo, contigo, consigo.

How it works

✓ Rule

After a preposition (a, de, con, para, sin, por…), use the tonic forms mí, ti, él/ella/usted, nosotros/as, vosotros/as, ellos/as/ustedes: Este regalo es para ti. The reflexive sí points back to the subject: Lo quiere todo para sí.

Good to know

⚠ Note

Never say con mí or con ti — con merges into conmigo, contigo, consigo. Also, after entre, según, excepto, menos and incluso, Spanish keeps the subject forms yo and tú: entre tú y yo, según tú.
