English — the definite article the

Use the when you and the listener both know which thing is meant: a specific noun, something mentioned before, or something unique. In the man is reading the book, both nouns are already identified. The stays the same for singular, plural and uncountable nouns.

How it works

Use the for a noun the listener can identify: something specific (the car outside), something mentioned a second time (I saw a dog. The dog was black.), something unique (the sun, the moon, the sky), and with superlatives (the best, the tallest building). The form never changes: the boy, the boys, the water.

Good to know

⚠ Note

Do not use the for general, uncountable or plural nouns spoken about in general: I like music (not the music), Water is important, Dogs are friendly. Use the only when the noun is specific: The music at the party was loud. Also drop the with most singular proper names: I live in London, not the London.
