Deutsch — Verb prefixes

German prefixes reshape a verb's meaning and grammar. Inseparable prefixes (be-, ver-, ent-, er-, zer-, miss-) never move; separable ones (an-, auf-, aus-, mit-, vor-) split off to the end of the clause. A few (um-, über-) do both, with different meanings.

How it works

✓ Rule

Inseparable prefixes are unstressed and stay welded to the verb everywhere; their participle takes no ge- (besuchen → besucht, verstehen → verstanden). Separable prefixes are stressed and split off to the clause end in main clauses: Ich rufe dich an; the participle inserts -ge-: anrufen → angerufen.

Examples

Prefixes by behavior, with an example
Prefix Type Example
be- inseparable besuchen: Ich besuche dich. — Ptz.: besucht
ver- inseparable vergessen: Ich vergesse den Termin. — Ptz.: vergessen
ent- inseparable entkommen: Der Dieb entkommt. — Ptz.: entkommen
zer- inseparable zerreißen: Er zerreißt den Brief. — Ptz.: zerrissen
an- separable anrufen: Ich rufe dich an. — Ptz.: angerufen
auf- separable aufstehen: Ich stehe früh auf. — Ptz.: aufgestanden
um- dual (both) umfahren: Er fährt das Schild um. ↔ Er umfährt das Hindernis.
über- dual (both) übersetzen: Der Fährmann setzt uns über. ↔ Sie übersetzt den Text.

Good to know

⚠ Note

With dual prefixes, stress decides everything: separable and literal (Er fährt das Schild um — he knocks the sign over, participle umgefahren) vs. inseparable and figurative (Er umfährt das Hindernis — he drives around it, participle umfahren). Never insert -ge- or a zu between an inseparable prefix and its verb.
