Italiano — the preposition di

di is one of the most common Italian prepositions. It shows possession (il libro di Marco), material, origin and comparison, and often merges with the article, as in di + il = del.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

di links two nouns to express possession or type: la casa di Luca (Luca's house), un libro di storia (a history book). It also states origin — Sono di Napoli — and forms comparisons with più/meno: più grande di te.

2

Examples

Main uses of di
Use Example Meaning
Possession il libro di Marco Marco's book
Material una tazza di vetro a glass cup
Origin Sono di Roma I'm from Rome
Partitive (some) Vorrei del pane I'd like some bread
Topic un libro di storia a history book
Comparison più alto di me taller than me

Good to know

⚠ Note

Before a definite article, di contracts: di + il = del, di + la = della, di + i = dei. In comparisons di comes before a noun or pronoun (più veloce di lui), but che is used when comparing two adjectives, verbs or nouns directly (meglio tardi che mai).
