Polski — Preposition variant forms
Several one-consonant prepositions gain an extra vowel -e before hard-to-pronounce consonant clusters: z becomes ze, w becomes we, od becomes ode. Compare z tobą but ze mną.
How it works
The longer form ending in -e appears when the next word begins with a consonant cluster that would be hard to say — especially one starting with the same or a similar sound as the preposition. So z + mną gives ze mną, w + Wrocławiu gives we Wrocławiu, od + mnie gives ode mnie, przed + wszystkim gives przede wszystkim.
Examples
| Base / variant | Example | When the -e appears |
|---|---|---|
| z / ze | ze mną, ze Szczecina, ze zła | before a cluster starting with s, z, ś, ź, ż or a sibilant |
| w / we | we Wrocławiu, we mnie, we wtorek | before a cluster starting with w or f plus a consonant |
| od / ode | ode mnie, ode dna | before mnie and a few clusters, e.g. dn- |
| nad / nade | nade mną, nade wszystko | before mną and wszystko |
| przed / przede | przede mną, przede wszystkim | before mną and the fixed phrase przede wszystkim |
Good to know
The variant is obligatory, not optional: ze mną is correct and z mną is wrong; the same holds for we mnie and ode mnie. The pronoun mnie almost always triggers the -e form (ze mnie, we mnie, ode mnie, nade mną, przede mną), so it is a reliable memory anchor.
