Polski — Prepositions with the dative
A small closed set of Polish prepositions requires the dative case: ku, dzięki, przeciw(ko), wbrew, naprzeciw(ko). After them the noun and its modifiers take dative endings, e.g. dzięki tobie, wbrew zasadom.
How it works
Each of these prepositions forces the following phrase into the dative, regardless of gender or number: ku brzegowi (toward the shore), dzięki przyjaciołom (thanks to friends), przeciwko decyzji (against the decision), wbrew rodzicom (against the parents' will).
The prepositions
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ku | toward, in the direction of (formal/literary) | ku morzu, ku pamięci ofiar |
| dzięki | thanks to, owing to (positive cause) | dzięki tobie, dzięki pomocy sąsiadów |
| przeciw(ko) | against, opposed to | przeciwko wojnie, przeciw wszystkim |
| wbrew | against/contrary to (someone's will or rules) | wbrew zasadom, wbrew woli rodziców |
| naprzeciw(ko) | opposite, facing, across from | naprzeciwko domu, naprzeciw wejścia |
Good to know
Do not confuse the pairs. przeciw(ko) governs the dative (przeciwko decyzji), the spatial naprzeciw(ko) ('opposite') governs the genitive (naprzeciwko domu), while the dative appears only in the fixed idiom wyjść naprzeciw czemuś (wyjść naprzeciw oczekiwaniom). Also mind meaning: dzięki marks a positive cause, so use z powodu or przez for negative ones — say z powodu deszczu, not *dzięki deszczu, for something bad.
