Deutsch — Preposition–article contractions
In German, certain prepositions merge with the dative or accusative article into a single short word: in + das becomes ins, zu + dem becomes zum. These contractions are standard in everyday speech and writing.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
The preposition and the article blend into one form: an + dem = am, in + dem = im, an + das = ans, in + das = ins, zu + dem = zum, zu + der = zur, bei + dem = beim, von + dem = vom. So you say Ich gehe ins Kino and Wir fahren zum Arzt, not in das / zu dem here.
2
The common contractions
| Full form | Contraction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| an + dem | am | am Fenster stehen |
| in + dem | im | im Haus bleiben |
| an + das | ans | ans Meer fahren |
| in + das | ins | ins Kino gehen |
| zu + dem | zum | zum Arzt gehen |
| zu + der | zur | zur Schule gehen |
| bei + dem | beim | beim Bäcker warten |
| von + dem | vom | vom Bahnhof kommen |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Keep the article separate when it is stressed or points to a specific one, like a demonstrative: An dem Tag war ich krank (that particular day), not Am Tag. With most everyday phrases, though, the contraction (im, zum, ins) is the natural choice.
