Deutsch — Accusative prepositions
A small fixed group of prepositions always takes the accusative case, no matter the context: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um, bis, entlang. The article after them shifts to its accusative form, e.g. für den Mann, ohne einen Grund.

How it works
✓ Rule
After these prepositions the masculine article der becomes den and ein becomes einen; feminine, neuter and plural articles stay the same. Compare durch die Stadt, gegen die Wand, but durch den Park, gegen einen Baum.

Examples
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| durch | through | durch den Park gehen |
| für | for | ein Geschenk für den Freund |
| gegen | against | gegen die Wand fahren |

| bis | until, up to | bis nächsten Montag warten |
| entlang | along (after the noun) | den Fluss entlang laufen |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Some of these prepositions contract with the neuter article das: für + das = fürs, um + das = ums, durch + das = durchs — as in fürs Kind, ums Haus. Note also that entlang usually follows its noun (den Fluss entlang), unlike the others.
