Deutsch — dative prepositions
A fixed group of prepositions always takes the dative case, no matter the sentence. Learn them as a set — aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber — and the article shifts to its dative form automatically.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
After these prepositions the noun phrase goes into the dative: der → dem, die → der, das → dem, die (plural) → den (+n on the noun). So mit dem Bus, aus der Stadt, bei den Eltern. The set is aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber.

| nach | to (places/countries) / after | nach dem Essen |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Some forms contract with the article and are the normal spoken choice: bei dem → beim, von dem → vom, zu dem → zum, zu der → zur — e.g. zum Arzt, zur Schule, beim Bäcker. And gegenüber often follows its noun: dem Bahnhof gegenüber. Don't switch to accusative here — these prepositions never take it.
