Deutsch — Dative case

The dative marks the indirect object — the person or thing to whom or for whom something happens. Ask wem? (to whom?): Ich gebe dem Mann ein Buch.

How it works

✓ Rule

In the dative the article changes by gender: masculine der → dem, neuter das → dem, feminine die → der, plural die → den (and the noun adds -n: den Kindern). The indefinite articles become einem / einer / einem. Example: Ich helfe der Frau; Wir danken den Gästen.

Forms

we / you (pl.) uns / euch
they / you (formal) ihnen / Ihnen

Good to know

⚠ Note

In the dative plural the noun almost always takes an extra -n: die Kinder → den Kindern, die Freunde → den Freunden (except plurals already ending in -n or -s). Also, some verbs always take the dative and no accusative — helfen, danken, gefallen, gehören, antworten: Das Buch gehört mir, not *mich.
