Français — Adverbs of quantity
The adverbs beaucoup, trop, assez, peu, un peu and très express quantity or intensity. Each one combines differently with a verb, an adjective or a noun.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Before a noun these adverbs take de without an article: beaucoup de pain, trop de bruit, un peu de sel. With a verb they follow it: J'aime beaucoup, Il dort peu. But très modifies only an adjective or another adverb: très grand, très bien — never a verb or a noun.

Examples
| Adverb | Combines with | Example |
|---|---|---|
| beaucoup | verb, noun (+ de); a lot / much | J'aime beaucoup ; beaucoup de pain |
| trop | verb, adjective, noun (+ de); too much | trop grand ; trop de bruit |
| assez | verb, adjective, noun (+ de); enough | assez bon ; assez de temps |
| peu | verb, noun (+ de); little / few | Il dort peu ; peu de gens |
| un peu | verb, adjective, noun (+ de); a little | un peu fatigué ; un peu de sel |
| très | adjective or adverb only; very | très grand ; très bien |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Common mistake: très is not used with a verb. Say J'aime beaucoup, not J'aime très. And before a noun the de stays bare, with no article: beaucoup de livres, never beaucoup des livres.
