Italiano — Adverbs in -mente

Most Italian adverbs of manner are formed by adding -mente to the feminine form of the adjective, like lento → lentamente.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Take the feminine singular of the adjective and add -mente: lenta → lentamente, vera → veramente. If the adjective ends in -le or -re, the final -e drops before -mente: facile → facilmente, regolare → regolarmente.

2

Examples

Adjective → adverb in -mente
Adjective (fem.) Adverb Meaning
lenta lentamente slowly
vera veramente truly, really
chiara chiaramente clearly
facile facilmente easily
gentile gentilmente kindly
regolare regolarmente regularly
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

The -e drops only before -mente, not in general: it is facilmente but the plain adverb of buono is the irregular bene, and folle keeps its final -e before -mente, giving follemente. A few adjectives use a special adverb (buono → bene, cattivo → male) instead of a -mente form.
