Polski — Simple vs compound future
Polish builds the future two ways. A perfective verb forms a one-word future (napiszę = I will write it, once and finished). An imperfective verb needs będę plus either the infinitive or the l-form: będę pisać / będę pisał (I will be writing, ongoing).
How it works
Choose the future by aspect. Perfective = one word, focused on completion: napiszę list (I'll write the letter and finish it). Imperfective = będę + infinitive or będę + l-form, focused on the process or repetition: będę pisać / będę pisał list (I'll be writing the letter). The l-form agrees in gender and number, so a woman says będę pisała.
Examples
| Future form | Meaning / use |
|---|---|
| napiszę | perfective, one word: I will write (it) and finish |
| będę pisać | imperfective, będę + infinitive: I will be writing (process) |
| będę pisał / będę pisała | imperfective, będę + l-form (m. / f.): same meaning, gender-marked |
| przeczytam | perfective: I will read (through), finish reading |
| będę czytać / będę czytał | imperfective: I will be reading (ongoing or habitual) |
| zrobię | perfective: I will do / make (it), completed action |
Good to know
Do not add będę to a perfective verb: not będę napisał, just napiszę. And będę pisać and będę pisał mean the same thing — the infinitive version is invariable, while the l-form must match gender (będę pisał / będę pisała / będziemy pisali).
