Français — Questions with prepositions
In French the preposition never stays at the end: it moves to the front together with the question word, as in À qui parles-tu ? or De quoi as-tu besoin ?
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Put the preposition first, then the interrogative word: qui for people (à qui, avec qui, chez qui) and quoi for things (de quoi, pour quoi). The rest of the question follows with inversion or est-ce que: Avec qui viens-tu ? = Avec qui est-ce que tu viens ?

Examples
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| à qui | to whom / whose | À qui téléphones-tu ? |
| de quoi | of / about what | De quoi as-tu besoin ? |
| avec qui | with whom | Avec qui viens-tu ? |
| pour qui | for whom | Pour qui est ce cadeau ? |
| pour quoi | for what (purpose) | Pour quoi faire ? |
| chez qui | at whose place | Chez qui dînes-tu ce soir ? |
| de qui | about whom | De qui parlez-vous ? |

⚠ Note
Don't copy the English pattern "Who are you talking to?" — French never leaves the preposition stranded. Also keep pour quoi (in two words, "for what purpose", Pour quoi faire ?) apart from pourquoi (one word, "why", Pourquoi pleures-tu ?).
