Deutsch — Indirect questions
An indirect question is a question tucked inside another sentence, like Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt. It is introduced by ob (for yes/no questions) or a W-word, and the conjugated verb moves to the very end of the clause.
How it works
A direct yes/no question becomes indirect with ob: Kommt er? → Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt. A W-question keeps its question word and simply reorders: Wann kommt er? → Ich frage mich, wann er kommt. In both cases the clause is verb-final and separated by a comma.
Examples
| Direct question | Indirect question (verb-final) |
|---|---|
| Kommt er heute? | Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt. |
| Hast du Zeit? | Sie fragt, ob du Zeit hast. |
| Wo wohnt sie? | Ich weiß nicht, wo sie wohnt. |
| Wann beginnt der Film? | Kannst du mir sagen, wann der Film beginnt? |
| Warum ist er müde? | Ich verstehe nicht, warum er müde ist. |
| Wie heißt du? | Er möchte wissen, wie du heißt. |
| Wer hat angerufen? | Weißt du, wer angerufen hat? |
Good to know
Never use ob together with a W-word — they are alternatives, not partners. Say Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt, not Ich weiß nicht, ob wann er kommt. Also, in an indirect question a separable prefix stays attached at the end: Wann kommt er an? → Ich frage mich, wann er ankommt.
