Polski — Indirect questions

An indirect question is a question embedded in a larger sentence, for example after nie wiem (I don't know). For yes/no questions Polish inserts czy; for other questions it keeps the question word.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Turn a yes/no question into a dependent clause with czy: nie wiem, czy przyjdzie (I don't know whether he'll come). For a wh-question, keep the same question word: nie wiem, kto to zrobił / gdzie mieszka. A comma always separates the two clauses and the word order stays like a statement.

2

Examples

Direct question → embedded question after nie wiem
Direct question Indirect question
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

Don't reach for the English word if in yes/no questions: czy is the only option — nie wiem, czy przyjdzie, never *jeśli. Keep czy for yes/no; use jeśli/gdyby only for real conditions (if it rains). Also, unlike English, the word order does not change: it stays subject-then-verb as in a statement.
