Français — concessive indefinites: quel que soit, qui que, quoi que

To say "whatever / whoever / wherever" with a sense of concession, French uses set phrases that all trigger the subjunctive: quel que soit, qui que, quoi que, où que and quelque… que.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

In quel que soit, quel is an adjective that agrees in gender and number with the following noun (Quel que soit le prix, Quelle que soit la raison), and soit is the subjunctive of être. The others are invariable and are followed by the subjunctive: qui que tu sois, quoi que tu fasses, où que tu ailles; quelque riche qu'il soit means "however rich he is."

2

The forms

Concessive expressions + subjunctive
Expression Meaning Example

Good to know

⚠ Note

Do not confuse quoi que in two words ("whatever": Quoi que tu dises) with quoique in one word, a concessive conjunction meaning "although" (Quoique fatigué, il continue). A useful test: if you can replace it with bien que, write it as one word quoique.
