Español — Adverbial relatives
In Spanish, donde, adonde, cuando and como can act as relative connectors: they link a subordinate clause to an antecedent of place, time or manner, and that antecedent can be explicit or left implicit.
How it works
donde and adonde mark place, cuando marks time and como marks manner. With an explicit antecedent the connector follows the noun, as in la ciudad donde nací; with an implicit one it stands alone, as in adonde tú vayas, iré yo, cuando termines, avísame or hazlo como quieras. Use adonde (or a donde) when there is movement toward a destination.
Examples
| Connector | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| donde | place (position) | la casa donde vivo |
| adonde | place (destination, movement) | el pueblo adonde voy |
| de donde | place (origin) | el país de donde vengo |
| por donde | place (path) | la puerta por donde entramos |
| cuando | time | te llamaré cuando llegue |
| como | manner | resolvió el problema como pudo |
Good to know
With an explicit noun of time, careful usage prefers en que over cuando: el día en que llegaste rather than el día cuando llegaste. Also, the relative forms donde, cuando and como carry no accent, unlike the interrogatives dónde, cuándo and cómo.
