Español — Choosing the relative pronoun
Spanish links clauses with several relative words. The default is que; use quien(es) for people, and the compound forms el que / el cual after prepositions or in non-defining clauses, as in El libro que leí and La mujer con quien hablé.
How it works
que is the all-purpose relative for things and people in defining clauses (La casa que compré). After a preposition, people take quien(es) (el amigo con quien salgo) or the article + que (el tema del que hablamos). Non-defining clauses, set off by commas, and long or formal prepositional phrases prefer el cual / la cual (los datos, los cuales revisé, son exactos). The neuter lo que / lo cual refers back to a whole idea (Dijo que sí, lo cual me alegró).
Forms and uses
| Pronoun | When to use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| que | General relative for things and people in defining clauses; no preposition. | El libro que leí es interesante. |
| quien / quienes | People only: after a preposition or in non-defining clauses; agrees in number. | La mujer con quien hablé es médica. |
| el / la / los / las que | After a preposition (often short ones); picks out one item and agrees in gender and number. | La casa en la que vivo es antigua. |
| el cual / la cual / los cuales / las cuales | Formal register: after long or compound prepositions and in non-defining clauses. | El puente por el cual pasamos es del siglo XV. |
| lo que / lo cual | Neuter: refers to a whole idea or an unnamed thing, not a specific noun. | No entiendo lo que dices. |
| cuyo / cuya / cuyos / cuyas | Possessive relative ('whose'); agrees with the thing possessed, not the owner. | El autor cuya novela leí ganó el premio. |
Good to know
In defining clauses (no commas), Spanish does not drop the relative the way English does: say El libro que compré, not El libro compré. After the prepositions a, con, de, en with things, an article is needed — la mesa sobre la que escribo, not la mesa sobre que escribo. And cuyo agrees with what follows it: la escritora cuyos libros leo (books are plural), never with the owner.
