Italiano — Partitive article
The partitive article (del, dello, della, dei, degli, delle) expresses an unspecified quantity — English "some" or "any". It is formed from di + the definite article and disappears in most negative sentences.

How it works
✓ Rule
Combine di with the definite article to match the noun's gender, number and first sound: Vuoi del pane? (some bread), Ho comprato della frutta e degli spaghetti. In the plural, dei/degli/delle simply means "some" and works as the plural of un/uno/una.

⚠ Note
In negative sentences the partitive is normally dropped: say Non ho pane, not Non ho del pane. It is also often omitted after expressions of quantity — un chilo di pane, un po' di zucchero — where di stands alone without the article.
