German articles: der, die, das

Every German noun has a gender and takes an article that changes with case. Here are the full definite and indefinite article tables in one place.

German has three genders (masculine, feminine, neuter) and four cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive). The article signals both — so learning these tables pays off across the whole language.

1

Definite article (the)

der bestimmte Artikel
Case Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominativ der die das die
Akkusativ den die das die
Dativ dem der dem den
Genitiv des der des der
2

Indefinite article (a/an)

der unbestimmte Artikel
Case Masculine Feminine Neuter
Nominativ ein eine ein
Akkusativ einen eine ein
Dativ einem einer einem
Genitiv eines einer eines
⚠ Note

The same endings (-en, -em, -er, -es) reappear on possessives (mein, dein) and on „kein”. Learn the pattern once, reuse it everywhere.
