Français — Articles with place names
In French, countries take a definite article (la France, le Japon, les États-Unis), but cities usually take none. The preposition changes with gender and number: en France, au Japon, aux États-Unis.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Feminine countries and those beginning with a vowel take en (en France, en Italie); masculine countries take au (au Japon, au Canada); plural countries take aux (aux États-Unis). Cities take no article and simply à: à Paris, à Tokyo.

Good to know
⚠ Note
Don't say en le Japon: en never combines with le/les. Use au (à + le) and aux (à + les) instead: au Japon, aux États-Unis. A few island cities keep an article (Le Havre → au Havre), and coming from a country uses de/du/des: de France, du Japon, des États-Unis.
