Français — Temporal conjunctions

Temporal conjunctions link two events in time. Most of them are followed by the indicative, but avant que requires the subjunctive.

How it works

quand, lorsque, pendant que, dès que, aussitôt que and tant que introduce a time clause in the indicative: Dès qu'il aura fini, nous partirons. In standard grammar après que also takes the indicative: Après qu'il est parti, elle a pleuré.

dès que Indicative Dès qu'il aura fini, nous partirons.
aussitôt que Indicative Aussitôt qu'elle est entrée, tout le monde s'est levé.
tant que Indicative Tant que tu seras là, je serai heureux.
après que Indicative Après qu'il est parti, elle a pleuré.
avant que Subjunctive Pars avant qu'il ne soit trop tard.

Good to know

⚠ Note

avant que is the one temporal conjunction that takes the subjunctive, often with the expletive ne: Pars avant qu'il ne soit trop tard. By analogy, many speakers wrongly use the subjunctive after après que, but the standard rule keeps the indicative: Après qu'il est arrivé (not soit arrivé).
