Deutsch — Conjunctional adverbs
Words like deshalb, trotzdem or dann link two main clauses. When one of them stands at the front of the sentence, it takes position 1 and forces inversion: the conjugated verb stays in position 2, before the subject.
How it works
The connector fills position 1, so the finite verb keeps position 2 and the subject moves after it: Es regnet, deshalb bleiben wir zu Hause. Compare the neutral order with the subject first (Wir bleiben deshalb zu Hause) — both are correct, but only the fronted connector triggers verb–subject inversion.
Examples
| Connector | Meaning | Example (verb in position 2) |
|---|---|---|
| deshalb | therefore, that's why | Es regnet, deshalb bleiben wir zu Hause. |
| deswegen | for that reason | Ich bin krank, deswegen komme ich nicht. |
| trotzdem | nevertheless, anyway | Es ist spät, trotzdem arbeitet er weiter. |
| dann | then, next | Zuerst essen wir, dann gehen wir ins Kino. |
| danach | afterwards | Wir kochen, danach räumen wir auf. |
| außerdem | besides, moreover | Es ist teuer, außerdem gefällt es mir nicht. |
| sonst | otherwise, or else | Beeil dich, sonst verpassen wir den Bus. |
Good to know
Do not confuse these adverbs with the coordinating conjunctions und, aber, oder, denn, sondern, which occupy position 0 and do not count for word order: after aber the subject still comes first (Es regnet, aber wir bleiben zu Hause), whereas after deshalb it does not (Es regnet, deshalb bleiben wir zu Hause). Writing »deshalb wir bleiben« is a typical mistake.
