Polski — Periphrastic comparison
Long or non-gradable adjectives are not compared with endings. They stay unchanged and take the words bardziej ('more') / mniej ('less') for the comparative and najbardziej / najmniej for the superlative, e.g. bardziej zmęczony, najbardziej znany.
How it works
The adjective keeps its base form and agrees with the noun; only bardziej / mniej and najbardziej / najmniej are added in front: interesujący film → bardziej interesujący film → najbardziej interesujący film. The words bardziej and najbardziej themselves never change.
Examples
| Positive | Comparative (bardziej) | Superlative (najbardziej) |
|---|---|---|
| zmęczony | bardziej zmęczony | najbardziej zmęczony |
| znany | bardziej znany | najbardziej znany |
| kolorowy | bardziej kolorowy | najbardziej kolorowy |
| interesujący | bardziej interesujący | najbardziej interesujący |
| zajęty | bardziej zajęty | najbardziej zajęty |
| chory | bardziej chory | najbardziej chory |
Good to know
Do not mix the two systems: forms like *bardziej ładniejszy are wrong — either ładny → ładniejszy (with an ending) or bardziej + base form, never both. Use the descriptive pattern chiefly for adjectives that resist endings (participial or borrowed ones): bardziej zmęczony, not *zmęczeńszy.
