Polski — Comparison of adverbs

Polish adverbs form the comparative with the ending -ej and the superlative by adding the prefix naj- to the comparative: szybko → szybciej → najszybciej.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Take the adverb, replace or add the ending -ej for the comparative, then prefix naj- for the superlative: szybko → szybciej → najszybciej. Adverbs derived from adjectives are graded like the adverb, and a common consonant softening occurs before -ej (drogo → drożej, wysoko → wyżej).

2

Examples

Positive, comparative and superlative degree
Positive Comparative Superlative
szybko szybciej najszybciej
dobrze lepiej najlepiej
źle gorzej najgorzej
dużo więcej najwięcej
mało mniej najmniej
ciepło cieplej najcieplej
daleko dalej najdalej
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

A few common adverbs are irregular and must be memorised: dobrze → lepiej → najlepiej, źle → gorzej → najgorzej, dużo → więcej, mało → mniej. Longer adverbs (often those in -o that resist -ej) are graded analytically with bardziej / najbardziej, e.g. bardziej szczegółowo — never mix the two by saying *bardziej szybciej.
