Français — The past subjunctive

The past subjunctive expresses a completed action inside a subjunctive clause. It is formed with the present subjunctive of avoir or être plus the past participle: bien qu'il soit parti (although he has left).

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Take the present subjunctive of the auxiliary (que j'aie, que je sois) and add the past participle: je suis content que tu aies fini, je doute qu'elle soit venue. The choice of avoir or être and any agreement follow the usual passé composé rules.

2

Conjugation

parler (with avoir) and partir (with être) in the past subjunctive
Person with « avoir » with « être »
qu'ils / elles qu'ils aient parlé qu'elles soient parties
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

Use the past subjunctive only when the clause action is finished before the main verb. If both happen at the same time, use the present subjunctive: compare je suis content qu'il vienne (he is coming) with je suis content qu'il soit venu (he has come). Don't confuse the être form qu'il soit venu with the avoir form qu'il ait fini.
