Español — Subjunctive in time clauses
When a time clause points to a future event, Spanish uses the subjunctive after connectors like cuando, hasta que and en cuanto: Cuando llegues, avísame.
How it works
A temporal connector takes the present subjunctive when the action has not yet happened and the main verb is future, imperative or a command intent: Te llamaré cuando termine; Espera hasta que llegue; En cuanto lo sepas, dímelo. If the same connector refers to a habit or a past fact, it takes the indicative: Cuando llego a casa, ceno (habit).
Examples
| Connector | Meaning | Example (future) |
|---|---|---|
| cuando | when | Cuando llegues, cenaremos. |
| hasta que | until | Espera aquí hasta que yo vuelva. |
| en cuanto | as soon as | En cuanto lo sepa, te aviso. |
| tan pronto como | as soon as | Te escribo tan pronto como pueda. |
| mientras | as long as / while | Mientras no llueva, saldremos. |
| antes de que | before | Llámame antes de que salgas. |
Good to know
antes de que always takes the subjunctive, even about the past: Salió antes de que llegáramos. With a shared subject, drop que and use the infinitive: antes de salir, not antes de que (yo) salga. Watch the false friend cuando: a habitual cuando + indicative (Cuando estudio, escucho música) never carries the subjunctive.
