English — word order

One sentence in four shapes — statement, negative, yes/no question, wh-question — to see how the word order changes.

word order
Type Sentence Meaning
Statement Anna is at home. Anna is at home.
Negative Anna is not at home. Anna is not at home.
Yes/no question Is Anna at home? Is Anna at home?
Wh-question Where is Anna? Where is Anna?
⚠ Note

German keeps the verb in second position and inverts for questions; English needs the helper “do” (with most verbs); Romance languages can make a question by intonation alone; Polish adds “czy” for yes/no questions.
