English — to be and to have

The two core English verbs. “be” is very irregular; “have” only changes in the third person. Both help build other tenses.

✓ Rule

Use “be” for states and continuous tenses (I am tired, She is working); use “have” for possession and perfect tenses (I have a car, They have finished). Third person: he/she/it is, he/she/it has.
